Modify behavior of Ion Storms to limit their degree of adverse impact.
Some of us on Nu would like to propose some modest modifications to Ion Storms to limit the degree of adverse impact in games.
As currently implemented, an ion storm can appear without warning, completely changing the balance of a sector. This can be inherently unfair as players would have invested months if not a year or more into the outcome of a particular game.
After discussion with some players on this issue, the ratified suggestions for implementation would be:
1.) Allow at least one turn warning before a storm appears in a particular spot. With that one turn window of warning, players can make the appropriate adjustments to their fleets and battle plans.
2.) Allow the portions of minefields not covered by the storm to be visible to players via minesweep. As currently implemented, an entire 150LY minefield/webminefield can be completely cloaked if the center of the minefield is covered by an Ion Storm.
3.) Allow mine sweeping at a reduced rate - 15% of mines normally swept that are visible after implementation of suggestion #2. This would give trapped ships, some chance to reduce the field and escape.

As the Birdmen are my favorite race to play, but usually hard pressed to win games, I suggest weakening Ion Storm effects would weaken one of that races few advantages. While most races find these storms an annoyance, I celebrate their arrival.

It's worth pointing out that Classic games will ALWAYS and forever stay true to the original, or at least 99% true. That was a promise to Tim W as I understand it. Ion storms in Classic games will remain unchanged.
